It is the official fossil of the state of California. The cat had a heavy, muscular build which was more bulky than other cats. The Columbian mammoth was over 12 feet tall. These huge elephants weighed over 10,000 pounds. The mammoth elephant ate a large amount of grass. The La Brea Area is a goldmine for fossils. Aniamals were easily trapped in the area because of the asphalt seeps. The animals would roam around in the Rancho La Brea area and be vunerable at any time. During the warmer seasons the asphalt became softer and stickier, making it even easier for animals to get trapped. The asphalt was often camouflaged with leaves and branches making it hard to see. Once animals were trapped, they became easy prey for the carnivores in the area. Sometimes predators like the sabertoothed cat would become trapped themselves. The animals were buried farily quickly by the asphalt thus preserving the bones in good condition. |
